Throughout my life I have always felt that conflict big or small was unnecessary and childish. I never saw a reason for outrage and conflict towards one another or between groups, organizations and countries. Somewhere within I always questioned it and that we should know better by now. Understandably each of us are all unique with different perspectives and opinions of how the world should be and act, seeing eye to eye on everything is an impossibility on a micro and macro scale. Conflict and tension are not always negative though, as it can create development and an expanded point of view. As long as the result of said conflict does not harm the other party in a humane way, in my opinion. Human life must be cherished above all, and I stand with my younger self that although conflict can ignite intense emotion, nobody should at the end of the day be hurt by it. It derives us of the gift and value of being human and suddenly we are not so different from the animal kingdom from which we evolved.
War for me has always been complete and utter waste or human life. As I have grown older, I have been able to understand better what causes war over history, but I have never been able to accept it. There has always been war since the dawn of human existence in one form another and it will most likely continue to be so. In any case I cannot help but argue that given the incredible technological and scientific advancements we have made in the past century that our collective minds should be focused on everything but global conflict. Indeed, WWI and WWII accelerated many technological advancements due to aggressive competition, but it shouldn’t serve as any form of reason to engage in another world war which could come to be our last. Every war and conflict are unique, but have we not learned from our previous mistakes and decisions? To this day as it always has, war is engaged over territory, religion, money and politics. They are of course sensitive and important topics but are they worth dying over? If we can accept that the past is the past and learn from it to better help tomorrow, then it should stand to reason that diplomatically we can agree on a non-lethal outcome.
“With great power there must also come – great responsibility.”
- Stan Lee, Amazing Fantasy #15
Today there must be more responsibility taken by world leaders to protect us. Still several wars are being fought around the world and people are living in fear of one world leader making the wrong move at the wrong time to start the next world war. In the year 2026 the thought of this is primitive and unacceptable as it proved that we have indeed learned nothing from our past. After the pandemic of 2020 the world as we know it has not been the same, leaving us still recovering. Out of that world tragedy greed and evil has risen and taken to accomplishing seemingly individualistic goals on the cost of human life and sanity. This all happening at a time in our history when we need to help each other in the community, country and globally, but unchecked egos and strongmen is keeping that hope at bay.
I can’t help but ponder the question of what is expected out of our world leaders today. Of course, politics and policies play a major role in an election, given that your country is lucky to have a fair democratic election. What we are missing in our calculation is to how each leader elect inspires us, because is that not the foundation of a true leader? How many world leaders of today can you say truly inspire you? Surely how a leader of your country acts, speaks and carries his or herself will in turn trickle down the system of society and plant itself amongst us. You may disagree with certain policies endorsed by your country’s leader but is it possible to look past them and be inspired what they are trying to do for you as a human being, and lastly do they inspire you to be a better person? It is paradoxical to me that every leader claim they want their countries, peoples and worlds best and yet when it comes down to it the actions prove otherwise.
“Let us not seek the Republican answer or the Democratic answer, but the right answer. Let us not seek to fix the blame for the past. Let us accept our own responsibility for the future.”
- John F. Kennedy
The fear is that what I am arguing is a naïve fantasy, but if decisions can be made by a few designated leaders that kill millions of people and shake the wellness of the entire world order, is it then too much to ask of the leaders with so much power to be able to sit down and agree on a way of peace and continued human development for the future, and in the worst case agree to disagree? I do not think so, in fact it is a job requirement and a standard that is to be expected.
Until that standard is met, the work begins with you and I. We must take responsibility as to how we act and treat one another in our given community. If they will not inspire us, we must inspire ourselves and set new standards to how we want our future generations to treat the future of earth and humankind. After all, lasting change in the world begins with the responsibility we take for ourselves… So lets meet halfway.
